Insider interview: meditation guru Rajesh Ananda

In this Insider Interview, we chat to meditation guru Rajesh Ananda

What’s your usual working day like?
I am usually up by 6am – and then I check my email messages are a number of our centres at hours ahead of us.  I then do 30 minutes meditation after which I will run for 20-30 minutes or do a weight programme.  This is followed by a light breakfast and its back in the office. We have around 30 events per year in all countries, so I am usually coordinating these.  There is often daily contact with our PR company and I may have to write or assist with press releases.  All of this is interspersed with enquiries from new people and I may have at least one teaching session per day.

What was your dream job when you were younger?
I wanted to be a pilot!  I have traveled around the world several times now and I am glad I did not follow that career, albeit a fabulous job – traveling is very tiring and when I get off a long haul, I am glad that it will be a while until the next one.

What's the best piece of career advice you've been given?
Always move from a position of strength and not weakness.

What's your number one tip?
Be totally absorbed in what you are doing but in a relaxed manner!  This does not mean you will not have objectivity, if you are relaxed, it will be there.

If you weren't doing the career you are now, what do you think you would be doing?
Probably working in software development or something with computers.

What's the best thing about your job?
I am instrumental in changing people’s lives.  I can’t walk the path for them, but I can be very instrumental in their change process.

What's the toughest part of your job?
Seeing the suffering of others – when they do not have to!

Most proud career moment to date?

When I made a video in dedicating to my wife and co-founder of FISU to celebrate a big birthday.  It was a poetic tribute followed by me singing to “I dreamed a dream”.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
Spreading my message in different parts of the world.  I speak Spanish well and would like to improve this,  so that  I can speak more publicly and on TV using my languages.
