Insider Interview: Sophie Cameron Davies

In this Insider Interview, we chat to luxury womenswear designer Sophie Cameron Davies who specialises in creating beautiful tailored silk shirts and dresses.

1. What’s your usual working day like?
Running my own fashion business means every working day is different. I have many different hats from finance, sales and marketing through to design and overseeing manufacturing. I enjoy the variety that running your own brand entails.

2. What was your dream job when you were younger?
Since a very young age I have always been creative, and after my very first textile lesson I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer. Everything I did from the age of 11 was focussed on developing that passion. My studio walls display a collection of posters that I have collected over the years from every fashion exhibition I went to.

3.    What's the best piece of career advice you've been given?
Make a career out of your passion. I think it is incredible important that you enjoy your work. The majority of our adult life is spent at work and so if you don’t enjoy your job or your industry then it has a significant effect on your happiness.  There will always be up and downs in any career but the positives will always out way the negatives if you are following a passion.

4. What's your number one style tip?
Less is more. I think it is important to invest in a few high quality garments that are versatile and can be worn for many occasions. I have a few go-to timeless pieces that have a beautiful fit and can be worn endlessly. I feel this age of fast fashion means products are bought and dispersed of too quickly. For me the SCD Bow Blouse is a style staple I can dress it up or down, for work, weekend of evening cocktails.

5. If you weren't doing the career you are now, what do you think you would be doing?
This has been an ambition since I can remember so it is hard to imagine doing anything else. I think I would still choose to do something in a creative industry as that is naturally what I am always drawn too. Whether its photography, drawing or simply cooking at home I love experimenting and creating something new.

6. If someone was looking for a career change into your industry, how would you propose the best way is to start?
The fashion industry is incredible tough and competitive. Whether you want to design for another company or start your own label it is important to have your own identity as a designer. Distinguish what is your aesthetic, whether its intricate and feminine, monochrome and minimal or just conceptual. Then ensure you start by gaining initial experience at relevant brands and continue to develop this individuality.

7. What's the best thing about your job?
I love seeing the new collections come to life at the seasonal photoshoot, creating beautiful campaign images.  The design inspiration, marketing concepts and brand ethos visually unify in each and every image. This is shown throughout the composition; from the garments, to the location and the model, through to the mood lighting. Working with a team of such talented creatives at the photoshoot is such an inspiring day. The images always encompass the brands philosophy; creating garments empowering women to feel feminine, elegant and alluring in their everyday life.

8. What's the toughest part of your job?
The toughest part of my job is the fact I am not just under one job title, I cover them all and have to become a businesswoman. For me it’s not just about designing a beautiful collection but learning to juggle the responsibilities of different specialisms.  As the fashion industry works so far in advance I am normally working on 2 or 3 seasons at once and then within that designing, marketing and manufacturing at the same time.

9. Most proud career moment to date?
After always dreaming of having my own brand it is the most rewarding thing to see my pieces desired and worn by women. Recently the Hollywood actress Christina Wren was photographed wearing the SCD Lace Back Top to an event in LA, that was a very proud moment.

10. Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
I would like the brand to be established as a leading luxury ready to wear label known internationally for beautifully fitting shirts and garments. My focus is on growing a successful label that continues to provide a consistent fit, quality and design for elegant women year after year.
