Insider Interview: Nia and Akilah Barnabie of Safiyas Cakes


In our next Insider Interview, we chat to sisters Nia and Akilah Barnabie of Safiyas Cakes to see how they made their passion for baking into a sweet success.

1. What’s your usual working day like?
Our Day starts Early - we usually begin with a review of our orders, contacting clients and keeping up-to-date with all our admin. music in the background and cakes in the oven. its always busy in our kitchens, with orders  trying out something new and perfecting something we already do. - We always have someone willing to taste a cake or dessert.

2. What was your dream job when you were younger?

Akilah: Interior design - being able to create and visualize something and then create it from scratch. i loved the opportunity to create something new and different and have something come to life.

3. What's the best piece of career advice you've been given?

Akilah : Perfect what you are already good at. feel confident in making mistakes and look to learn from them. be willing to try something new and stay positive in what you can do.

4. What's your number one style tip?

Go with what you love. be confident in you and what makes you smile.

5. If you weren't doing the career you are now, what do you think you would be doing?

Working with people creating in some way - i have a bucket list of things id love to do. hopefully ill get  to explore some of those.

6. If someone was looking for a career change into your industry, how would you propose the best way is to start?

Nia: Genuinely find out what makes you happy - what excites you. create a vision board - let that drive guide you to do what you are passionate about. We are all different and we can all bring something different to the table.

7. What's the best thing about your job?

Time management - being able to use my time effectively within the day and doing something with it that i truly enjoy. People often arnt able to have that luxury.


8. What's the toughest part of your job?

Nia: On a personal level I feel that finding enough time to spend with friends and family can be the toughest - We work  constantly - and while i love my job. Fining the balance between the two proves to be hard as you have to give your all to making the business flourish.

9. Most proud career moment to date?

Recognition -  from international peers - people that you have admired as well as family. seeing the things you have been able to achieve.

10. Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?

Still doing a job i love, :)
