Insider Interview: Susie Amy

In our first Insider Interview, we get to know Susie Amy, actress and new brand ambassador of ARK Skincare. We chat all things worklife, the best career advice she has ever been given and of course all things beauty and style.

What’s your usual working day like?

My days vary hugely. It all depends on whether I'm doing a play, The Wright Stuff, reflexology, beauty blogging or working with ARK Skincare in my new role as their beauty ambassador. My favourite place to sit and do my work is at Shoreditch House in East London. I sometimes sit there all day and get things done. As work is so varied I try to make my own routine - or days can be unproductive as I always find something to distract me at home!

What was your dream job when you were younger?

To be an actress, without question. If I had gone down an academic route - as my school would have encouraged - I would have liked to be a lawyer or a writer.

What's the best piece of career advice you've been given?

I used to say no to a lot. Actually saying no can feel safe but taking what's in front of you and trying it can be really rewarding

What's your number one style tip?

Embrace your own style - what suits Angelina Jolie will not suit Scarlett Johansson - we are all built differently, and need to work with that. Anything that doesn't show the waist can be unflattering on me. I am also a believer in being experimental - there is nothing worse than never trying anything outside of your comfort zone!

If you weren't doing the career you are now, what do you think you would be doing?

Something in the field of health and beauty. The only magazine I read on a regular basis is Women's Health. I love reading and learning about fitness, supplements, nutrition - and my main passion skincare.

If someone was looking for a career change into your industry, how would you propose the best way is to start?

In terms of acting, it's a difficult industry. I've learnt that more and more over the years. It isn't just rumoured to be a difficult industry it truly is one. Having said all of that I wouldn't change a thing - I've done things, and been to places, and met people through that work that have made life so fun and interesting. I would say to anyone to be thick skinned, it can be fairly brutal, and to realise what you feel disappointed about today - you will be over in a weeks time.

What's the best thing about your job?

The best thing about my job is the variety. My newest job is working with ARK Skincare - I have been supporter and keen follower of the brand since being introduced to it in 2012. It made sense for them to work with someone who was already passionate about the products. These are professional grade products - they contain active ingredients that are of a high enough level to actually make a difference to the skin. Currently I'm learning the formulation of each product - and why specific ingredients are selected for each.

Most proud career moment to date?

I did Frederick Knott's play 'Wait until Dark' - I played a character who was blind, she also never leaves the stage. It is known to be one of the most exhausting theatre roles, and after the first performance I thought to myself - 'I will never get through 150 of these'. I did, and it was pretty rewarding and a lot of fun. My favourite job however was 'La Femme Musketeer'. We filmed in beautiful Croatia for 4 months - working with swords and horses - and the most fantastic group of people.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?

Wherever you see yourself - you won't be. Life is full of surprises so I try not to think ahead too far. I would like to see more of the world. Travelling is my favourite thing.

Next week we will be discussing more 'Insider Interview' careers and questions.
