Insider Interview: Amber Wood

In our latest Insider Interview, we chat to Emslie Creative's Director, Amber Wood, about a career in Fashion PR and building her own successful agency.

What’s your usual working day like?

I like to get up early to catch up on any news breaking over night in the fashion and celebrity world.  I cycle to my office on Brick Lane and plan my day ahead.  My days vary from meeting press for breakfasts, catching up with clients to visiting stores for the wholesale side of the agency.  We have many press and celebrities visiting our showroom to borrow clothes to wear for upcoming TV appearances or photo shoots.  Ultimately we are communicating all of our fantastic brands to the media and selling our wholesale brands to key stockists around the world.

What was your dream job when you were younger?

I knew I always wanted to work in fashion, I was just not sure in what area.  I always dreamed of being a fashion designer (now I am older and wiser I realise this could never happen!).

What's the best piece of career advice you've been given?

What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.  Wise words from my old boss Leila Fataar

What's your number one style tip?

Your style is an extension of your personality so experiment and enjoy what you wear.  Being comfortable in your own skin is rule number one.

If you weren't doing the career you are now, what do you think you would be doing?

Following my dads footsteps and working in the restaurant business.  He runs his own pubs in south London and I couldn't be more proud of his achievements.

If someone was looking for a career change into your industry, how would you propose the best way is to start?

Try and gain as much experience and talk to any friends in that industry.  Ask a million questions!

What's the best thing about your job?

I have built my own mini empire at Emslie Creative and I have worked with some incredible clothing brands.

What's the toughest part of your job?

Everything rests on my shoulders; the good, the bad and the sometimes ugly... however I wouldn't change it for the world.

Most proud career moment to date?

I am still running my business after three years of hard work.  I am really proud of that!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?

Hopefully still building the mini Emslie Creative empire!  I am really enjoying the wholesale side of the business too which will continue to grow.  The PR industry has changed so much in the last five years so I am looking forward to adapting my ever evolving agency!
