Continuing the new weekly blog feature, an A to Z of careers in the Fashion, Beauty and Entertainment industries.

D IS FOR...

When discussing a designer/developer role, this relates to the web, websites, blogs, e-marketing, apps etc.

Essentially people who can both design and then code (develop) websites are worth their weight in gold - processes are usually quicker, and for a service, its usually far more seamless for one designer/developer to produce a site from start-to-finish.

With the web, blogs, social media & apps such an intricate part of a service, business, brand or product, there will always be a demand for web designers and developers. You need to have an excellent knowledge of coding and html, in addition to clear graphic design knowledge and an understanding of the Adobe applications will be important if you want to add branding and logo designs to your remit. If you haven't studied graphic design, there are many short courses in html and online tutorials such as HTMLDOG in addition to evening classes at college's or universities where you can learn the basics to get you started.

It is popular for designers and developers to work on a freelance basis or set up their own digital agency, so its important to market yourself properly and have a basic understanding of invoicing and the remuneration to charge a realistic fee for your services.
