C IS FOR... (A to Z of Fashion & Beauty Careers)

I am writing a new weekly blog feature, an A to Z of careers in the Fashion, Beauty and related industries. It's something that I wish someone had made evident to me when I was at school and later at University. Unless you know somethings exists, how can you know if it's right for you?

I hope this new weekly feature is useful and here goes!

C IS FOR...CREATIVE DIRECTOR

Creative Director.
This is the role of a visionary, through the use of a media. In terms of the fashion industry, this an be the concept of a photoshoot. From everything from the model used, to the location to the themes and tearsheets given to the stylist & makeup artist & prop designers. For fashion & beauty shoots a Creative Director can be used to make an intangible idea, tangible.

For fashion weeks, a Creative Director has to envisage and create something such as Chanel's Autumn Winter 14 Supermarket catwalk. Working with a production team, the PR & Marketing teams within the brand to create the ideas and concept of the catwalk.

For films and the moving image, a Creative Director's role is fairly similar, there are just no limits to the ideas and creativity involved. A Creative Director would start initial ideas and oversea a team in place for something as ostentatious as The Lord Of The Rings, right through to Fight Club.

To get into Creative Direction its quite a tough market, the best way is to get experience at a production agency or an events company. Alternatively, working in-house for a brand such as Chanel will open the doors up to you for a creative role, and if you are more interested in Creative Direction in Fashion or Beauty, working as a stylist or photographers assistant can get you industry contacts and on the job experience that is invaluable.

In terms of pay, at first the role can be very low wages, and free work is required to build your portfolio, however top level Creative Director's who are in demand are very well paid and travel does tend to be a great perk of this role!

All A to Z entries will be compiled in a little ibooks download in a little while, including further career suggestions, tips & insider information & a contacts list. Watch this space for the download link...

A IS FOR...ACCOUNTANT

Accountant.
If you have a penchant for numbers & figures, this might be the path for you.
Every fashion house, beauty brand, PR agency & all freelancers need an accountant, large fashion & beauty houses such as Burberry & the Estee Lauder group will employ an in house finance team, smaller companies will use external accounting firms for their bookkeeping, payroll & taxes.

Accountants require degrees, a related field isn't usually necessary if you have an aptitude for numbers. You can do a Business or an Economics degree & upon graduation undertake a role in an accountants whilst taking the compulsory exams within the profession. Further exams & study are compulsory for an Accountant, so if you are fed up of exams post-uni then maybe going straight into Accounting isn't for you!

Nevertheless, being an Accountant can be a very lucrative profession and there will always be a demand for these professionals within the creative industries.
